Resilience Expert Tasha Schuh Will Present atBenzie Central High School

November 3 at 1:00 PM

Resilience Expert Tasha Schuh Will Present at Benzie Central MS/HS on Tuesday, November 3 at 1:00 PM, Addressing Mental Health.

Tasha Schuh is an inspirational speaker who equips youth and educators to be resilient for their mental and emotional health. The four components of her speech, PATH (Purpose, Attitude, Team, and Hope), helped Tasha be resilient after a life-changing theater accident at age 16, which left her paralyzed from the chest down. She now lives a vibrant, fulfilling life, sharing her message of PATH across the nation.

Tasha’s message will empower our BCCS students and staff with tangible tools to improve their mental and emotional health and overcome life's challenges. We are looking forward to welcoming Tasha to our school. Tash also plans to visit with our MS SEEDS program after her presentation.

About Tasha Schuh

Tasha and her husband/manager, Doug, speak to audiences across the country, focusing on youth and educators, sharing her message of PATH and resilience. She is also the author of two books “My Last Step Backward” and “My Next Move Forward.” Tasha has received many awards, including The National Rehabilitation Champion Award and The Hometown Hero Award.

Beyond her inspirational message, Tasha is passionate about helping youth build a foundation for resilience in their lives. Tasha and a team of mental health and education professionals created The Power of PATH: Building Resilience for Mental Health and Suicide Awareness Curriculum™. This teacher-led program is designed for grades 6-12.

Tasha has spoken to over 70,000 students since the 2017/2018 school year. She makes an impact and inspires real progress with students' mental health awareness, along with skills-based coping.

Help us to welcome one of our very own Benzie Central Alumni, Miranda Buist.

Miranda is so excited and grateful for the opportunity to become part of the school community as school nurse at Betsie Valley and Lake Ann Elementary schools.

She was raised in Benzie County and is a proud Benzie Central graduate.

After high school, she attended Central Michigan University, where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology.

She then returned to Benzie County to attend Baker College, earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, followed by her Master of Science in Nursing from Spring Arbor University.

Miranda lives in Thompsonville with her husband and three children on a small farm.

Outside of work, she enjoys spending time with her family, hiking with her dogs, horseback riding, and reading.

Her life revolves around children, and caring for children, and supporting their growth andwellness has always been a passion and priority for Miranda.

She feels especially fortunate to have the opportunity to serve the community where she grew up.

She looks forward to building meaningful relationships with students and their families.

Miranda is excited to work alongside teachers and school staff to support the health, well-being and needs of each child!

BCMS Cross Country Benzie Blitz 2-Miler

The BCMS Cross Country team welcomed the crowds to a home meet Wednesday at the Benzie Blitz 2-Miler.

The team fed off all the support and warm October sun and had a great run!

There were six Personal Records (PRs) on the day, with three apiece on the boys and girls squads.

The home team put on a show, with the boys and girls both seeing first place finishes from Lexie Ewing and Isaiah Graetz.

For Lexie, this was her third straight #1 finish, while Isaiah continued his five race run of first place finishes while also reaching a PR!

Matthew Vroman had his fastest race yet too, finishing fifth, while Wyatt Streeter dropped over a minute off his previous best time.

On the girls side, Elizabeth Armstrong had a PR race, finishing fourth, and Isabella Wood had a fantastic breakthrough run, cutting off a minute from her previous best.

Audrey Torongo had another solid run, reaching a season best finish, and Lexi Leiffers also had a PR.

It was indeed a fine fall day for the Husky MSXC team to tune up for MHSAA Regionals next week in Cadillac for one final race.

Cheer these Huskies on! GO BENZIE.

Maria is being inducted in the Lake Superior State University - Athletic Hall of Fame

Let's hear it for Benzie Central Alumni, Maria Blazejewski.

Maria is being inducted in the Lake Superior State University Alumni Association - Athletic Hall of Fame -

"Maria Blazejewski ’13Maria Blazejewski ‘13 was one of the most accomplished student-athletes in Lake Superior State women’s basketball history during her career from 2009 to 2013. A two-year team captain, she led the Lakers in scoring three times (2009-10, 2011-12, and 2012-13) and led the team in rebounding as a senior, averaging 6.5 rebounds per game. Her outstanding 2012-13 season earned First Team All-GLIAC honors after receiving Second Team recognition in both 2010-11 and 2011-12.

Blazejewski’s name remains prominent throughout the Laker record book. She ranks fifth all-time in career scoring with 1,585 points, fifth in free-throw percentage (80.2%), seventh in free throws made (372), and tenth in field goals made (581). Her senior season was one of the finest in program history, highlighted by a school-record 164 free throws made, an 86.8 percent free-throw percentage that ranks fourth all-time, and a scoring average of 17.8 points per game, ninth-best in a single season.

Her contributions to the program extended beyond statistics. Blazejewski earned the Terry McDermott Freshman of the Year Award, the Bud Cooper Coaches Award, the Chris Comito Award, and the Deb McPherson Outstanding Female Athlete of the Year Award. In recognition of her lasting impact on the program, the women’s basketball team established the “4 Award” in honor of her jersey number. The award recognizes what a student-athlete has given to the university, community, and team, and continues to be presented to deserving Lakers women’s basketball players.

A standout in the classroom as well, Blazejewski earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Exercise Science and graduated magna cum laude. She was named to the Dean’s List all four years and received GLIAC Academic Excellence honors three times.

Looking back on her time at Lake State, Blazejewski is most appreciative of the relationships she built along the way. “When I look back on my time with the LSSU women’s basketball program, the first thing that comes to mind is my Laker teammates,” she said. “We pushed each other every day, worked tirelessly side by side, and built memories that went far beyond the court.

”Following her graduation, Blazejewski embarked on a successful professional basketball career that has taken her to nine countries across Europe, Australia, and Puerto Rico. Among her many accomplishments, she finished sixth in MVP voting in Australia’s WNBL, earned All-Portugal First Team and All-Portugal Import Team honors, averaged more than 19 points per game in four professional leagues, and was recognized in 2023 as one of the Grand Traverse area’s Influential Women.

Despite her success on the international stage, Blazejewski says she has gained an even greater appreciation for the support she received during her years as a Laker. She remains grateful to her family, friends, professors, fellow students, alumni, and members of the Sault Ste. Marie community who helped shape her experience at Lake Superior State and looks forward to reconnecting with many of them at the October reunion.

Blazejewski’s connection to LSSU also runs through her family. Her parents, Mark and Kathleen, are both LSSU alumni, and she has an older sister, Meredith, and older brother, Lucas. Her father, Mark, was a member of the 1975-76 LSSU men’s basketball team, which was inducted into the LSSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2016.

Benzie Central continues to be proud of Maria and all of her accomplishments. We also are grateful for what she gives back to our girls baskeball program with her various clinics.

So, today was “Duncan Day” at Homestead Hills Elementary.

If you know Duncan, then you know.

Duncan Ramsey is a custodian at the Hills, but he is oh, SO MUCH MORE!

Last week, Duncan had a health scare. It sure puts things into perspective.

He is known for wearing flannel, so…the Hills showered him with love by channeling their flannel.

The staff had to take pictures in shifts of availability, but they all love him so much that they wanted to be “in” the picture with him.

If you’ve never worked with Duncan, you’re missing out.

I first worked with him over thirty years ago at the Hungry Tummy Restaurant.

We you, Duncan.

Flannel never looked so good.

I challenge you all to “channel your flannel” this week for Duncan.

he BCMS Cross Country team was in action this past Thursday in Manistee for the Chris Grabowski Memorial Invitational.

On a rain soaked course with muddy turns and plenty of spots for a wipe out or two, these Huskies relied on their toughness and strength and powered through to another strong finish.

Isaiah Graetz, recently named the MS Boys Northwest Conference Champion, took home his fourth straight #1 finish and sixth overall this season.

On the girls side, Lexie Ewing, also named the MS Northwest Conference Champion, won her second straight race - and second #1 finish of the week!

Elizabeth Armstrong powered the rest of the team with a second place finish and the girls team took overall runner-up.

Gwen Hoffman medaled at seventh, and Madeline Kohn and Avery Teeples rounded out the Top 5 Benzie girl runners.

Audrey Torongo had a strong race and brave "Benzie Sprint" to finish.

For the boys team, Matthew Vroman medaled at sixth, not letting a loose shoelace from the start slow him down!

It was a valiant physical and mental effort by every runner.

The team is primed for their last two races of the season, beginning next Wednesday at home starting at 3:30 and then October 28 in Cadillac for the MHSAA Regionals.

“Saturday, the Benzie Central Hiking Club hosted its October hike at Green Point Dunes Nature Preserve, south of Elberta. Students joined Ms. Shepherd, Ms. Pritchett, Ms. Johnston, Mr. Jarnot, Ms. Ryder, Ms. Spencer, Ms. Iverson, Mr. Campana, and Mr. Stewart to hike the 2.5-mile loop through the preserve. It was a great evening for a crisp hike with lots of autumn colors!The Benzie Central Hiking Club hosts an outdoor event each month during the school year. The BCMS Cross Country team was in action Tuesday afternoon at the final Northwest Conference Jamboree of the season at Glen Lake.

This Husky squad showed true grit and positivity on a tough course and rose to the occasion with outstanding results!

Both the boys and girls teams had #1 finishes from Isaiah Graetz and Lexie Ewing!

The girls team tied for first place overall with Glen Lake and sent another message across the conference that these young ladies can really run!

Elizabeth Armstrong had a strong 4th place finish, while Gwen Hoffman came in at 6th.

Hard races from Madeline Kohn and a breakout performance from sixth grader Ellyssa Knapp rounded out the top 5 for the first place finishing girls squad.

For the boys, seventh grader Matthew Vroman finished 3rd overall in a field full of talented runners, while Jace Carpenter had another PR (Personal Record), continuing to see big drops in his race times.

All in all, it was an exhilarating day for the entire Benzie XC program.

Bond & Sinking Fund Project Updates

The financial commitment from our tax payers has allowed Benzie County Central Schools to
enhance our infrastructure-including new roofs, electric updates, mechanical updates, and other key improvements that extend the life of our facilities. Every facility in our district was touched.

Every classroom space was outfitted with new student chairs, tables/desks as well as new teacher desks/chairs. Every student in the district is provided a chromebook for learning. Technology enhancements have helped ensure students are learning in a 21st century classroom. Additionally, every upgrade was intended to improve energy efficiency.

AdviseMI places college graduates in selected high schools across Michigan, particularly high schools that are located in communities with low college-going rates, to serve as college advisers. Serving alongside high school counselors and other school professionals, advisers support students as they explore their postsecondary options and complete college-going steps. Advisers make a difference in the lives of Michigan students, families, and communities.

Middle school had a DAY at Shepherd today!

7 medalists including overall champ Isaiah Graetz (his fourth win of the season).

Top ten finishes from Isaiah, Matt Vroman, Lexie Ewing, Liz Armstrong, Gwen Hoffman.

The girls came together for the overall championship. Huge races from Gwen Hoffman and Avery Teeples passing numerous runners over the last mile to help the team secure the 2 point victory in a huge field.

The team had seven lifetime best races!

These Huskies are rolling!

This weekend students from Benzie Central High School, accompanied by Mr. Stewart, Mr. Jarnot, Ms. Johnston, Ms. Abbie Smith, Mr. Kelly, and Mrs. Campana, traveled to the U.P. for a hiking trip at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore organized by the Benzie Central Hiking Club.

After making the journey up on Saturday, the group set out early to hike the 10.5-mile Chapel Loop on Sunday. The fall colors were out in force, the skies were clear, and the temperatures were perfect for a beautiful early autumn hike!

The Benzie Central Hiking Club hosts monthly hikes throughout the school year, open to Benzie Central students in grades 9-12. The Hiking Club would like to thank its sponsors, Crystal Mountain and Cherry Republic, for their generous support of the club. Stay tuned for information about October's hike!

An Education Benefits Form is very important to school food service in Michigan, even though Michigan provides school meals at no cost to students.

The key point is that the form is no longer just about whether a child pays for lunch—it helps establish eligibility data that affects funding and programs across the district.

The Education Benefits Form helps Food Service accurately document student eligibility, supports proper meal-program administration, and provides the district with data that can help secure additional funding for educational programs and services.

For Benzie County Central Schools, this is especially important to communicate to families as: “Even though school meals are free, completing the Education Benefits Form helps make sure our district receives every dollar of funding our students are eligible to receive.”

Effective for the 2026/27 School Year...

A NEW Michigan Law REQUIRES schools to limit student use of electronic devices during the school day.

• All day, every day. NO electronic device during instructional time. K-12.

• Electronic devices are allowed on buses. Please be respectful of others.

• Middle School and High School students may use their cell phones during their scheduled lunch times. K-5 remain ELECTRONIC FREE.

• While at school, ALL ELECTRONIC DEVICES must be in lockers and powered off during the instructional school day.

**Yes, devices are able to be used after school.

What is an electronic device?

An electronic device includes, but is not limited to:

Cell Phones

Smartwatches

Tablets

Earpods/Airpods

Gaming devices

Any device that can communicate, record, transmit, or access media or the internet

If you don’t want your child’s device taken, please tell them to not have it out OR don’t have them bring it to school.

It’s STATE LAW: This is the law, and we are required to follow it.

Lisa will be our Betsie Valley Elementary Principal, effective July 1, 2026.

It is safe to say that Betsie Valley Elementary will be in good hands!

Lisa Migazzi, M.Ed. is an educator, leader, and community connector dedicated to improving outcomes for children, families, and schools.

With a career spanning classroom teaching, nonprofit leadership, and regional STEM strategy, she brings a unique blend of instructional expertise, organizational leadership, and systems-level thinking to her work.Lisa currently serves as an educator at Leland Public School, where she designs and adapts curriculum to meet the diverse needs of all learners while contributing to school improvement and curriculum development efforts.

Her passion for creating inclusive, engaging learning environments is grounded in years of experience across grade levels and school settings, where she has consistently been recognized for fostering strong student achievement and a positive classroom culture.

Previously, Lisa served as Chief Executive Officer of the Traverse Bay Children’s Advocacy Center, after holding the role of Director of Intervention Services.

In that role, she led organizational strategy, operations, and community partnerships to support children impacted by abuse.

She strengthened multidisciplinary collaboration, expanded advocacy resources, and maintained high levels of client satisfaction while supporting efforts to secure critical funding.Lisa’s leadership extends to regional education systems through her work as a MiSTEM Regional Director, where she supported STEM implementation across multiple districts, managed grant funding, and facilitated partnerships between schools, industry, and community organizations.

Her ability to connect stakeholders and align resources has made her a trusted collaborator and strategic leader throughout Northwest Michigan.A U.S. Coast Guard veteran, Lisa served eight years in a variety of roles, including as a Health Service Technician (Corpsman), where she provided medical care, managed regional pharmacy operations, and led training initiatives. She was a certified EMT and also served in law enforcement as a boarding team member, further strengthening her skills in high-pressure decision-making and public safety.

Her military service instilled a deep sense of discipline, service, and leadership that continues to guide her professional work today.

Lisa holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership from Grand Valley State University and maintains a Professional Education Certificate in the State of Michigan.

She is widely recognized for her ability to build meaningful relationships, lead with integrity, and create environments where students, staff, and communities can thrive.

This is what Lisa had to say on her newly appointed role at Betsie Valley Elementary.

"I am incredibly excited to begin this journey and look forward to partnering with all of you, the leadership team, the staff, and the broader school community. I am committed to supporting the continued success of the district and to serving with integrity, collaboration, and a deep belief in the potential of every child."
